The submerged site in Sant'Alessio, which was reported to the Sopraintendenza in 1991, is located in a sandy and almost flat sea floor. The area is characterized by a considerable depth, strong currents, high visibility of the coast and lack of protection. Those characteristics helped the good conservation of the finds.
In 1998, the Sopraintendenza Archeologica of Messina created a new program, aimed to the protection of the site, since it requires a deeper knowledge of the real condition of those places.
Underwater searches, which have been carried out in the past few years in the depths of Sant'Alessio, highlighted the presence of remains of two wrecks, whose cargo consisted of amphorae, which were dated back to the First century A.D.It is thought that the amphorae were used to transport Tauromenitanu wine.
Sopraintendenza of Messina investigated with two campaigns in 1998 and 1999, helped by Carabinieri and "Marenostrum" volunteers from Archeoclub d'Italia and logistically supported by the Sede Comprensoriale of Valle D'Agrò and the municipality of Sant'Alessio Siculo.
Two amphorae and an anchor are preserved at Villa Genovesi.
